Is Sobriety Boring?

Peace v. boredom, childlike wonder + are you calling me boring?

Don't mistake peace for boredom ☮

If you're a moderate drinker life is full of highs and lows. There's the anticipation of drinking, the high from the dopamine dump of that first drink, and the physical and emotional low you experience following a night of drinking before your brain and body return to homeostasis. When you're a non-drinker you spend a lot more time in that homeostasis space. In the beginning, what might feel like boredom is the absence of chaos and a beautiful sense of peace.

Childlike wonder

Walt Whitman said, “Be curious, not judgemental.” When you stop drinking alcohol this starts to happen naturally. Your brain chemicals level out and you start the day ahead of the game, not in a depressed deficit. Childlike wonder and curiosity will start to replace judgment, and moments of joy will come more naturally. It's hard to be bored when you're curious.

Are you calling me boring?

I've been called a lot of things but BORING is not one of them. I spent this past weekend with my dearest friends from high school and I laughed my ass off just as much as I ever did when I was drinking. I felt zero deprivation, zero desire to drink (it did take some time to get to this place), and had zero hangover the next morning. What's more boring than a hangover that makes you suffer through, or miss, the things you really want to do? Take my word for it, not only am I not bored, I'm having fun like I did when I was a kid.

Believe me, I understand the fear of boredom because I HAD the fear of boredom. Please also believe that on the other side of quitting drinking, you'll find a whole lot of peace, curiosity, and FUN!
